AI Policy

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY

Al-Ibrah: Jurnal Pendidikan dan Keilmuan Islam recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies may support certain aspects of academic research, manuscript preparation, and scholarly communication. However, their use must remain consistent with the principles of academic integrity, transparency, originality, accountability, and responsible research practices.

This policy establishes the requirements for the use and disclosure of AI tools by authors, editors, and reviewers involved in the journal's publication process.

1. General Principles

The use of AI tools must not compromise the accuracy, originality, reliability, or ethical integrity of scholarly work. All parties involved in the publication process are responsible for ensuring that AI-assisted activities are conducted transparently and appropriately.

AI tools may support academic work, but they cannot replace human scholarly judgment, critical thinking, independent analysis, or responsibility for the published content.

2. Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use AI tools for limited and appropriate purposes, including language editing, grammar correction, translation assistance, improving readability, organizing ideas, and supporting preliminary literature exploration.

The use of AI must not replace the authors' intellectual contribution, research design, critical analysis, interpretation of findings, or scholarly conclusions.

Authors must ensure that:

  1. All claims, data, interpretations, and references in the manuscript are accurate and verifiable.

  2. AI-generated or AI-assisted content is reviewed and critically evaluated by the authors before submission.

  3. All cited sources exist and accurately support the statements for which they are cited.

  4. AI tools are not used to fabricate or manipulate research data, images, references, quotations, or research findings.

  5. The manuscript does not contain plagiarized material or misrepresented intellectual contributions.

  6. The authors retain full responsibility for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and ethical compliance of the submitted manuscript.

AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume authorship responsibilities, approve the final manuscript, or be held accountable for its content.

3. Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose the use of AI tools when those tools have made a substantive contribution to the development, analysis, interpretation, or presentation of the manuscript.

The disclosure should identify the AI tool used, its purpose, and the nature of its contribution. Where relevant, authors should also explain how AI-assisted outputs were reviewed, verified, and incorporated into the manuscript.

Routine spelling, grammar, and basic language correction generally do not require a separate disclosure unless the journal's submission instructions specify otherwise.

The disclosure should be included in a designated section of the manuscript, preferably before the references, in accordance with the journal's manuscript preparation guidelines.

Example statement when AI has been used:

“AI Use Disclosure: The authors used [name of AI tool] to assist with [specific purpose]. All AI-assisted outputs were reviewed and verified by the authors, who take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the final manuscript.”

Example statement when AI has not been used:

“AI Use Disclosure: The authors declare that no generative AI tools were used in the preparation of this manuscript.”

Authors must ensure that their disclosure accurately reflects the actual use of AI tools. Disclosure does not exempt authors from responsibility for errors, fabricated information, plagiarism, or other forms of research misconduct.

4. Prohibited Uses of AI

The following uses of AI are prohibited:

  1. Generating, fabricating, falsifying, or manipulating research data, results, images, or evidence and presenting them as authentic.

  2. Creating fictitious references, quotations, sources, or bibliographic information.

  3. Producing plagiarized or misleading content and presenting it as original scholarly work without appropriate verification and attribution.

  4. Using AI to conceal the origin of material, misrepresent authorship, or evade plagiarism detection.

  5. Generating false research claims or unsupported conclusions and presenting them as verified findings.

  6. Uploading confidential, unpublished, or personally identifiable research information to external AI systems without appropriate authorization and safeguards.

  7. Using AI outputs in ways that violate applicable ethical standards, intellectual property rights, privacy obligations, or research regulations.

Suspected violations will be assessed in accordance with the journal's publication ethics and research misconduct policies.

5. Responsibilities of Editors

Editors may use AI-assisted tools for appropriate administrative or technical purposes, provided that such use does not compromise editorial independence, confidentiality, or the fairness of the publication process.

Editors must not rely solely on AI-generated assessments to make decisions concerning manuscript acceptance, rejection, research integrity, or publication ethics.

Editorial decisions must remain under human responsibility and be based on scholarly merit, relevance to the journal's scope, peer-review assessments, and applicable editorial policies.

Editors must protect confidential manuscript information and must not upload unpublished manuscripts or sensitive editorial materials to external AI systems unless the use is expressly permitted by the journal's procedures and adequate confidentiality safeguards are in place.

6. Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers must evaluate manuscripts independently and maintain the confidentiality of all materials received during peer review.

Reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts, confidential research data, or identifiable author information to external AI tools without explicit authorization and appropriate safeguards.

AI tools must not replace a reviewer's independent scholarly judgment. Reviewers remain responsible for the accuracy, fairness, relevance, and professionalism of their review reports.

If AI tools are used in preparing a review report in a manner permitted by the journal, reviewers must ensure that the report is critically verified and does not disclose confidential information or contain unsupported assessments.

7. AI Detection and Editorial Assessment

The journal may use appropriate screening methods or technical tools to assist in identifying potential concerns related to plagiarism, fabricated content, or undisclosed AI use.

However, AI-detection results must not be treated as conclusive evidence of misconduct. Such tools may produce false positives or false negatives, and their results must be interpreted cautiously.

Any suspected violation will be assessed through a fair editorial process that considers the manuscript's content, supporting evidence, the author's explanation where appropriate, and the journal's applicable publication ethics policies.

Editorial action will be proportionate to the nature and seriousness of the established violation.

8. Accountability and Publication Ethics

Authors remain fully accountable for the content of their manuscripts, including any material generated or assisted by AI tools. Editors and reviewers are likewise responsible for maintaining confidentiality, impartiality, and ethical standards within their respective roles.

Failure to disclose substantive AI use, fabrication of research content, misuse of confidential information, or other violations may result in requests for clarification, manuscript revision, rejection, correction, expression of concern, or retraction, depending on the circumstances and the applicable editorial policies.

9. Policy Review

Al-Ibrah: Jurnal Pendidikan dan Keilmuan Islam may review and update this policy as AI technologies, scholarly publishing practices, and research ethics standards evolve.

All authors, editors, and reviewers are expected to comply with the version of the policy applicable to their participation in the journal's publication process.

The journal is committed to ensuring that AI technologies are used responsibly and transparently, while preserving human accountability, academic independence, and the integrity of scholarly communication.
